Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the nature of the children with cleft lips and cleft palates, and to provide basic data for effective nursing planning and intervention.
The subjects for the study were 51 mothers whose children had cleft lips and cleft palates, and visited a pediatric plastic surgery unit of S. University Hospital.
Non-probability convenient sampling technique was employed, and the data was collected from Dec. 1, 1986 to Jan. 20, 1987 by the self-reported questionnaire.
The data was analyzed by the frequency and percentage.
The results of the study can be summarized as follows;
1. General characteristics of the children under the study were as such; There were 76.5% males and 23.5% females, 47% of them had cleft lips, 12% cleft palates, and the rest, cleft lips with cleft palates.
2. For feeding methods, 82.3% of the mothers reported artificial milk feeding of their children. 43.2% of the subjects responded their feeding method did not differ from that of normal children. Only 20% of the respondents reported that they were exposed to specific feeding techniques by medical personnel.
3. Emotional responses of the mothers after delivery of the deformed babies were; 28% of the mothers had guilt feelings, 26% denied the fact, 24% felt grief, 12.2% felt anger, and 9% wished the babies to be dead.
4. As for emotional support, the subjects reported support from their husband; families, medical personnels, and other mothers who had handicapped children.
5. Reported difficulties in caring babies were showing the babies to others (31.3%), babies sick and catching cold frequently (27.7%), difficulties in feeding (21.4%), financial problem for a plastic surgery (7.196) and lack of accessible specialists and consultants (4.5%).
6. The subjects wished to the nurse to provide specific explanations; about corrective surgery as procedure and prognosis, informations about speech therapy, teaching specific feeding techniques and informations about routine child care such as bathing, schedule of sleeping, clothing, selection of toys and immunizations, etc.
